The Gentle Scotsman

The Gentle Scotsman began during a weekend anniversary retreat with my wife, and talented artist Karisa Lee. We visited Lavender Kisses Farms to paint highland cows on location, working fast and instinctively to capture the personality, the light, and that calm presence these animals carry. There’s something about painting outdoors that forces honesty. You have to simplify, commit, and respond to the moment.

This piece didn’t stay a simple plein air study. I brought it back into the studio and let it evolve. It went through major transformations as I reworked the structure, pushed the values, and refined the color until the cow felt fully alive on the canvas. The final painting holds both parts of the journey, the immediacy of that day on the farm and the deeper decisions that only happen with time back in the studio.

For collectors, that process is part of the value. I’m including on location photos and works in progress images because they document the story behind the painting and show how it was built and reshaped. This is a finished, signed, one of one original, and once it sells, it’s gone. It includes a certificate of authenticity.
